Project Highlights
Ecofficiency developed a segregation strategy to apply value engineering to the excavation & removal of contaminated ground, ensure complete compliance, achieve 100% diversion from landfill and save £260k for Volker Rail.
Volker Rail is one of the UK’s leading multi-disciplinary railway infrastructure contractors. The company provides a wide range of railway infrastructure services and works around the country.
Volker Rail were upgrading a section of railway tracks in Cambridge. The upgrade scheme required full site clearance, removing waste soils including hazardous materials. The main challenge was to identify areas of non- hazardous ground within a predominantly hazardous site.
Volker Rail were looking for good value engineering & Ecofficiency worked hard to achieve savings across the project, from avoiding landfill to selecting the best contractors.
Timing was of the essence and Ecofficiency worked within a stringent Programme of Works to clear all the contaminated materials from site.
Project Management
Volker Rail provided site investigation reports and waste classification testing. We used this information to design a clear segregation strategy. Our heat mapping system showed exactly where each waste classification set was located.
Ecofficiency provided a watching brief throughout the contract and worked with Volker Rail to advise them during the excavation exercise.
Non-Hazardous areas of ground were identified through compliance testing to maximise the area excavated. This material was stockpiled separately and compliance tested for clarity prior to removal from site.
Our heat mapping system is easily applied to all sites and saves time and money for our clients. Ecofficiency provided a Site Manager to supervise the removal of contaminated material and ensure all waste transfer notes / consignment notes were correctly completed and wagons were sent to the correct destination.
The Results
Together with our key supply chain partners Ecofficiency achieved 100% diversion from landfill. Given the large volumes of hazardous waste material, maximising Non-Hazardous areas for excavation & avoiding the cost of the landfill tax meant that Volker Rail made significant savings.
