Wooden pallets are a staple across many sites and sectors, and there is an increasing desire to make practices more sustainable. One of the simplest ways to minimise the environmental impact of wooden pallets is to limit to amount of new pallets that are manufactured.
To combat the harvesting of natural resources, industries are choosing to use their pallets again and again. It is estimated that around 2 billion pallets are currently in service, with approximately 350 million of these being reused by pallet users.

Due to their material, pallets can either be recycled or reused, depending on their condition after use. Most of the wood used to make pallets is similar in quality to the lumber used to make furniture and other durable goods. As a result, pallets can often be reused multiple times over in their intended form, with only minor refurbishment where necessary.
Pallets that are past their prime and can’t be reused can still have a sustainable end of life! They can be recycled and repurposed. An example of this is creating mulch, which can be used in landscaping and gardening. This is just as beneficial, as it keeps bulky waste out of landfill where it would otherwise be taking up space and potentially creating hazardous conditions. Figures show that less than 1% of recovered pallets end up in landfill sites.
By extending the lifecycle of pallets through either repair or recycling, we can significantly reduce the demand for virgin wood and help lower carbon emissions associated with the manufacturing process such as logging, manufacturing and transportation.
