PPE and workwear are essential for many businesses, whether it’s for maintaining a professional brand image or fulfilling health and safety requirements. Despite its importance, it can often become a hidden cost and have an additional environmental impact.

Updates or changes to branding, business acquisitions, surplus stock and inconsistent inventory management can all lead to PPE and workwear being discarded long before they reach the end of their usable life.

This creates more than just unnecessary waste, but also increased purchasing costs, higher Scope 3 emissions, ongoing storage challenges and potential brand protection risks if branded garments leave the business.

Ecofficiency’s compliant circular solution provides a smarter way to manage surplus PPE and workwear. Rather than sending items straight for disposal, we prioritise reuse wherever possible before recycling, extending the lifespan of products and keeping valuable resources in circulation. This circular approach not only helps organisations reduce costs and environmental impact, but for every tonne of PPE and workwear processed, it can also help offset up to 14.7 tonnes of Scope 4 avoided CO2e emissions through reuse and life extension.

How does it work?

Collection and Assessment

The first step is our national collection service, where your items are segregated and assessed based on the condition they are in. From this, we decide which items are suitable for reuse, refurbishment or recycling.

Professional Decontamination

All collected items must meet strict hygiene standards, which we achieve through our specialist laundering service. Our environmentally safe process removes dirt, oil and other contaminants, as well as killing 99.999% of all known germs.

This process uses nearly 50% fewer resources than conventional wash processes. We also work closely with PPE manufacturers and distributors, following recommended wash and drying temperatures to protect the integrity of fabrics, coatings and protective properties.

Reuse and Redistribution

If required, minor repairs are carried out to extend garment life further. Each item is then put through an accredited testing and verification process to ensure it is fit for reuse before being returned to service. Garments can be returned to the business and given to the original teams or redistributed across alternative sites, reducing the need for replacements.

Rebranding and Debadging

We are able to overprint existing logos, rebrand garments or remove branding altogether, ensuring PPE and workwear can remain in use without outdated or incorrect branding entering circulation. This allows organisations to extend the life of their garments whilst maintaining brand integrity.

Responsible Recycling

This solution does prioritise reuse, but we understand not everything will be suitable for continued use. If this is the case, the items can instead be responsibly recycled.

Ecofficiency has recently introduced bioremediation as part of our expanding service offering. This is a natural process that uses microorganisms, such as bacteria, to break down pollutants in water, pipework or waste. Through this process, contaminants are converted into harmless substances like H2O and CO2 which helps to reduce any issues surrounding pollution such as algae growth, fats, oils and grease (FOG) build up and odour.

Bioremediation is becoming one of the most effective and sustainable solutions for contaminated soil and water treatment. Below we will answer some of the most frequently asked questions we get about our bioremediation service to help you better understand how it works and the benefits it can offer.

Why choose bioremediation over traditional methods?

We understand that bioremediation is a relatively new approach within the industry, and that traditional methods may initially feel like the more familiar choice. However, bioremediation has the benefit or being a more sustainable solution by reducing environmental impact. Because treatment is carried out on site itself, it can often remove the need for excavation and disposal, minimising disruption and allowing remediation to take place alongside ongoing works.

Is bioremediation cost-effective?

Compared with traditional methods, bioremediation can help reduce overall project costs in several ways. Treating contaminants on-site minimises landfill use, transport requirements, disposal costs, and regulatory risks which all contributing to a more cost-efficient solution.

Is bioremediation safe?

Bioremediation is completely safe, as it uses naturally occurring biological processes, making it both safe and environmentally friendly. With minimal reliance on chemical treatments or heavy machinery, it can also help reduce on-site health and safety risks.

Which industries benefit most from bioremediation?

Key sectors that can benefit from using bioremediation include construction, facilities management, utilities, industrial manufacturing, and environmental services.

Which contaminants are commonly treated using bioremediation?

Common contaminants include fuel spills, lubricants, oils, drainage issue, FOG (fats, oils and grease) build up and organic residues from previous land use.

Does bioremediation support environmental compliance?

When properly managed, bioremediation can help organisations meet environmental standards and regulatory compliance. It also supports wider sustainability goals, including carbon reduction, waste minimisation, and circular economy objectives.

Can it be integrated into existing waste management processes?

Yes it can! Bioremediation can work alongside existing waste and recycling strategies without requiring significant operational changes. With tailored support from Ecofficiency, organisations can access compliant, traceable, and efficient waste solutions, including assistance with implementing bioremediation services.

Soil and water systems are often plagued by organic contamination, sludge, fats, oil and grease (FOG) build-up, algae growth, hydrocarbons, and persistent odours. These issues affect a range of industries causing disruption to operational timelines, environmental pressure and rising maintenance costs.

To address organic waste and contamination build-up, Ecofficiency now offers a fully natural and sustainable bioremediation solution!

What Is Bioremediation?

Bioremediation is a biotechnology process that utilises naturally occurring micro-organisms to break down environmental pollutants. These micro-organisms, including microbes and bacteria, have a natural ability to digest contaminants and can transform them into harmless substances like H₂O and CO₂.

As an entirely organic process, bioremediation provides a sustainable solution for treating contamination and pollution. The natural element removes any need for harsh chemicals or mechanical processes, creating a non-disruptive solution that enables sites to remain operational during treatment. Unlike traditional methods, remediation tackles the source of contamination, helping eliminate odours naturally rather than just masking them with chemicals. An additional benefit of this is that it reduces on-site health and safety risks that may arise with the use of chemicals or machinery.

How it works on site

Every site is different, and will require a certain dosage to address the levels of contamination. Environmental conditions, contamination extent and operational requirements are all considered when deciding in which format the bioremediation will be delivered, either as loose powder, tablets or bags.

Dosage levels are determined through field experience, testing, and performance analysis to ensure optimal effectiveness for each individual site. These different formats allow for safe, controlled, and efficient application across a wide range of environments.

A tailored approach from Ecofficiency

Ecofficiency provides a fully tailored bioremediation service designed to fit the specific needs of your site.

A site visit is completed initially to assess the extent of contamination, odour source, sludge depth and operational risks. Using this data, a bespoke bioremediation blend and dosage programme is developed, along with a clear schedule outlining expected outcomes and costs.

Once the process is complete and contamination is resolved, Ecofficiency can also offer ongoing support and semi-regular dosing to ensure long-term success and maintenance of ecological health over time.

As organisations place greater emphasis on environmental responsibility, bioremediation is the ideal solution that directly supports ESG and SDG commitments. Bioremediation is a natural, science-led approach that not only resolves contamination but also supports biodiversity and ecosystem rehabilitation, delivering sustainable, environmentally positive outcomes.

With tailored support from Ecofficiency, organisations can take proactive steps towards cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environments.

Bellway Homes – Wellfield Rise – Site has been awarded Ecofficiency’s Best Practice Award for March 2024.

The site team at Bellway Homes Wellfield Rise has been presented with the Best Practice Award for March 2024 based on these two categories:

100% Monthly Site Assessment score

Dave and his site teams’ enthusiastic attitude toward segregation and the Managed Waste Service from the beginning of the project.

Ecofficiency were first introduced to the project 3 months ago, with a new division with Bellway being recently awarded to us. During the introductory phase of Ecofficiency’s Managed Waste Service, we implemented a waste management system onto site, complete with a segregated compound area with colour-coded signage, and a Toolbox Talk was given to all the site team to reinforce the importance of segregation on site.

The site manager and his teams attitude towards our unique waste management system has been commendable from the very start! He is driven to ensure the team delivers great results on site – Wellfield Rise have achieved 100% on the first site assessment score after the Toolbox Talk training. Site Manager Steve has bought into every aspect of the Managed Waste Service and has often asked questions and guidance to make sure him and his team achieve the best results they can.

When asked about how Ecofficiency have helped on the project, Stev said: “Ecofficiency’s Construction Support Advisor Steve Bailey has helped us at Bellway homes reduce the amount of wastage drastically by giving adequate and useful guidance, also by enabling us to utilize the tools they have to offer such as; the magnetic signage for tipping skips, silicone drums and skip segregation ideas shown on the toolbox talks.. I’d also like to give a special thank you to my on-site team for buying into the waste reduction methods we have implemented here at wellfield rise namely the forklift truck driver Andrew little”

Bellway Homes – Wellfield Rise is a great example of how quickly, with good collaboration and engagement on site, waste management can improve. Well done to Steve and his team for achieving fantastic results on site!

Key Project Results

Project Duration: 4 Years

Diversion Rate: 100%

Waste Intensity: 3.4 Tonnes

Bellway Homes Tranby Park Site is the first site to be awarded Ecofficiency’s Best Practice Award twice!

The site team at Bellway Homes Tranby Park has been presented with the Best Practice Award for February 2024 based on these three categories:

Outstanding Waste Intensity Score – 3.4 Tonnes per 100m2 build

100% Monthly Site Assessment score consecutively

Dave and his site teams’ enthusiastic attitude toward segregation and the Managed Waste Service from the beginning of the project.

Ecofficiency first began working with Bellway Yorkshire on the Tranby Park site back in January 2019. A waste management system was put in place where several monitored segregation compounds were set up around site along with colour-coded signage to ensure segregation at source. Throughout the duration of the project, regular toolbox talks were presented to all trades on site to further reinforce best practice in waste management.

Through the implementation of Ecofficiency’s Managed Waste Service, Tranby Park achieved an outstanding waste intensity score for the past four years – an impressive 3.4 Tonne per 100m2 of build. This is the lowest waste intensity figure across all Bellway Yorkshire sites!

Site Manager Dave has shown an enthusiastic attitude towards Ecofficiency’s Managed Waste Service from the initial stages of the project. The excellent collaboration between Eco and Bellway Homes on this project can be reflected through the outstanding results achieved by Dave and his site team.

Dave Turner, Site Manager at Bellway Tranby Park, said: “Over the past four years Ecofficiency and the on-site support they provide has been invaluable to creating the Waste Management systems on site and the Waste Intensity performance at Tranby Park. Having a good team and regular monitoring from the site management team is key to helping control segregation on site! A big benefit of Ecofficiency’s service is the toolbox talks that they provide on a regular basis to continually drive segregation”.

Dave’s attitude towards segregation and Ecofficiency’s Managed Waste Service strategy has been key to driving the sites waste intensity figure down, which has ultimately led him to be the worthy winner of the Best Practice Award for February 2024.

From 6th April 2024 ALL Workplaces in Wales MUST separate their waste for recycling, the Welsh Government have introduced new regulations that will require all businesses to separate recyclable materials from other waste.

As part of the new legislation, the following materials will need to be separated for collection, and collected separately:

Food – for premises that produce more than 5kg of food waste a week.

Paper and card

Glass

Metal, plastic, and cartons and other fibre-plastic composite packaging of a similar composition

Unsold small waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)

Unsold textiles

There will also be a ban on the following:

Sending food waste to sewers

Separately collected waste going to incineration plants and landfill, including a ban on all wood waste going to landfill.

Why is this happening:

The Welsh Government have set a National Target to Recycle 70% by 2025 and become a zero-waste nation by 2050. These new targets are focused on improving the quality and quantity of recycling collected across Wales.

Who does it affect:

The legal requirements to separate waste for recycling will affect:

All Workplaces – including businesses, the public and third sector

Those who collect the waste, or arrange for waste to be collected

Those who collect, receive, keep, treat or transport waste who will need to keep the waste separate from other types of waste or substances

What Next:

Review on site operations to identify which recycling streams you produce.

Contact Ecofficiency if you feel that you would benefits from an on-site audit.

Once waste streams have been identified Ecofficiency can work with you to identify the best size, type and number of containers you require to meet the regulatory change.

Cost of Non-Compliance:

Natural Resources Wales are enforcing the new legislation, and if the Producer of the waste has banned recyclable materials in their general waste then you could face a £300 fine for every offence.

Ecofficiency have recently signed up to become a ‘FORS Champion’ – through our knowledge of the industry as a company we have identified that increasingly more of our clients require FORS as a minimum standard within their contracts – for example the upcoming HS2 Works.

We have therefore committed to promoting the scheme, and explaining the benefits, to all of our supply chain to try and raise standards throughout the industry.

What is FORS? It stands for ‘Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme’, a voluntary accreditation scheme encompassing all aspects of safety, fuel efficiency, vehicle emissions and improved operations.

What does it do? FORS helps fleet operators to measure and monitor performance and alter operations in order to demonstrate best practice – it’s open to operators of vans, trucks, mini-buses, coaches and other vehicles.

FORS Members are amongst the safest, most efficient and greenest operators – statistics from 200 Silver and Gold members demonstrated the following overall results:

15% reduction in CO2

6% improvement in Miles per Gallon

8% reduction in Penalty Charge Notices

6% reduction in damage only, slight and serious injury incidents

Further information is available via www.fors-online.org.uk , and there are three levels of accreditation – Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Bronze – first step in the scheme, confirming that the operator employs good practice and complies with all legal conditions of business

Silver – awarded to high quality operators who are committed to becoming safer and more efficient, while reducing their environmental impact

Gold – awarded to only exceptional operators, who have met specific, exacting targets and are continuing to improve their performance.

What is the Legislation?

In 2009 the Environment Agency passed legislation outlining that gypsum-based materials, such as plasterboard, must not be landfilled where it has the potential to be mixed with biodegradable materials, and that they must be separated at source for recovery and recycling. This applies to all businesses.

Why Segregate?

It is important to ensure plasterboard is segregated to prevent contamination of other waste streams, and to adhere to legislative requirements. If plasterboard is mixed in with other waste, it has the potential to generate hydrogen sulphide upon degradation which is highly toxic and presents a very serious health and safety issue on-site and for the receiving site.

Under the EWC classification waste plasterboard is classified as non-hazardous waste (EWC 17 08 02) however it cannot be mixed with any other waste stream and must be segregated.

What will happen if plasterboard is not segregated?

When contaminated material is tipped at a Transfer station, operatives must be deployed to segregate the contaminated fractions out, this delays the whole waste receiving process, as all Waste Transfer Stations are fully mechanised. If the mechanical process is stopped because of operatives on the floor segregating, there is an associated cost linked to this, which is then passed on to the site that produced the waste (the source of the arising).

Contamination costs vary, dependent on the level of contamination, but can run into £100’s.

If plasterboard waste needs to be sent to landfill, then it must be deposited in a separate, self-contained mono-cell specifically designed for high sulphate wastes, this is very costly.

Our supply chain have now advised that there will be Zero Tolerance towards any contamination.

Our Segregation Strategy

Ecofficiency are committed to working with you to segregate waste streams, and rates for segregated waste will remain lower than mixed waste rates, however we do understand that space is sometimes at a premium and an additional skip is not always a viable option, this is where skip bags can be provided for small quantities.

Why Recycle?

It is better for the environment & it reduces cost.

Segregation is a legal requirement and keeps businesses compliant.

Enhances Corporate and social responsibility.

Demonstrates that businesses care for the environment.

As of the 1st September 2023, The Environment Agency (EA) has confirmed that the Regulatory Position Statement (RPS) 250 is to be withdrawn.

The withdrawal of RPS 250 in England means that structural timbers, wooden tiling battens and external joinery from pre-2007 buildings, will automatically be classified as hazardous and can no longer be accepted for recycling and recovery at wood recycling sites.

This means businesses will have to make immediate changes to the way they handle their waste wood, especially those operating in the construction, housebuilding, social housing or demolition industry.

How does this affect me?

If you work with demolition wood waste, you must ensure that you understand the quantities and types of hazardous waste wood arising from demolition and refurbishment activities – and ensure that you are handling any potentially hazardous wood waste correctly.

How do I know if the Waste Wood is hazardous?

Wood Waste Classification Guide

The following flow chart details the initial questions that need to be asked when assessing whether your waste wood should be classed as hazardous or non-hazardous.

By classifying waste wood, you can identify which items are hazardous under WM3 guidance and ensure they are dealt with appropriately.

Wood Grading System

The WRA has produced an official Wood Grading System and guidelines to assist you in determining whether your waste wood is potentially hazardous. It is important for businesses that handle and create wood waste to note that there is no definitive guide to what is or isn’t hazardous.
